Joanne Merrett
Joanne MerrettCertified Teacher
Personal Bio :
My name is Joanne Merrett and I started running in high school at the OFSA Level in the 4 x 100 relay and the 100, 200 yards for the high school track team. I was also a competitive volleyball player for the high school team. Running was my passion and when I went to University and gained the freshman15lbs I took up running again to lose the weight.

Once I started my career in Law, I got bored with the shorter distances and decided to take long distance running. I trained and raced my first half marathon in 2003 and liked it so much, I conquered my first marathon in 2004. 12 marathons, 12 half marathons a few 5kms races. I needed a new challenge. I discovered the Sprints and Ironman 70.03 races. I loved the challenge of the race and the longer distances. I have completed 3 Half Ironmans and a few Sprint distances.

After leaving my law career I decided to go back to school to pursue health fitness. Upon meeting Jeff Bergin, who has been a mentor and friend and taught me a lot about the field. I knew this is what I wanted to do with my future. I received my Master’s Level Personal Training level with Sports Performance Institute, my certification as an NCCP Multi Level Coach, certification in Group Fitness with Sports Performance Institute and my I will graduate in 2014 as a certified Fitness and Health Consultant from Algonquin College.

I coached many runners from LTR to the Marathon and have trained with amazing coaches for the Half Ironman. Coaching and teaching is what I love to do and I hope to continue doing so into my golden age.

I have developed dozens of trainers in the Cree Nation since 2008 and one unique aspect is that these trainers are starting to teach in their first language which is Cree.
Furthermore, I have helped develop new fitness classes and strength programs which are being sustained on a year round basis.

Jeff Bergin (SPI) has been an integral part of my success, helping me develop sound management skills, a broader knowledge of the fitness industry and a passionate approach to Personal Training.
The future looks bright for the Cree Nation and I am glad to promote health and fitness to next generation of First Nations population.
